Wood is a natural product. All plants have defense mechanisms to protect themselves from bugs and larger animals. These defenses are usually in the form of allergens to deter insects from eating them. ALL WOODS CONTAIN ALERGENS. Some people react to certain allergens; this is called an allergic reaction. As it relates to solid wood contact, the most common type of allergic reaction is contact dermatitis. While the chances of having a reaction to solid wood contact are small, they can be at times sever and should not be taken lightly. Wood alergies are cumulative so it is possible to develop a reaction to a wood that has not previously been a problem. Certain families of woods have a higher probability of causing a reaction than others. The Dalbergia family, commonly known as rosewoods, are very reactive. Rosewoods are not advised for use as jewelry. The Diospyros family, commonly known as ebony, could be considered potentially reactive and special care should be used when wearing ebony. All wood can be potentially allergenic. Wood is a pourous material and should never be considered sterile. |
